The Road Less Traveled

A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out. Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Walk besides me and be my friend.

Tubing the Comal

After much preparation, planning, and packing, we have finally left San Antonio for Los Angeles to begin our much-anticipated around the world trip. We didn’t have enough time to get properly excited since we were trying to figure out how to adequately fit all of our junk from the apartment into a storage into the size of a spacious walk-in closet. With lots of help from Nate, Randy, and Tim, we carefully balanced our bed, dresser, and armoire in such a position that it fits precariously into our 5 feet by 9 feet storage space. Hope a pair of spiders don’t jump on it simultaneously and knock them over.

In prep for our trip, we were lucky to have several opportunities to see friends and family. One of the first get-togethers was having friends come to San Antonio for our “International Beer Party.” Everyone brought their own beers from several continents, and they all were quite tasty. We had friends from both TU (University of Tulsa) and TU (Trinity University) who came over. The following day we made the drive north up to New Braunfels and float the Comal River and avoided scrapping our butts on the river bottom. Great weekend!

Los Angeles, Jumping Off Point

Now that we are here in L.A., where the smog appears 30 minutes before you land at LAX, we took an entire day to relax and just “be” for a while. We did walk to the beach with our TU friend Chrissy and her roommate Vola and rode a bike from Santa Monica’s beach down to Venice Beach. Down on Venice Beach, I took the time to flex and ask where the gym was. What has been most surprising to me about L.A.? The weather here is quite cool and the people aren’t as odd as the people you might find in New Mexico. They’re actually quite normal, but in much more stylish clothes.

Tomorrow evening we fly from LAX to Rarotonga, Cook Islands via Papeete, our first stop in our trip around the world. It marks the culmination of two years of intensive planning and wanderlust. Hope y’all enjoy the ride with us.

Peace, JW
