Before Nadine, the kids, and myself started our Christmas vacation at the end of our first semester at Cairo American College, there are six unique facts about Cyprus to know.
Rich History and Culture
Cyprus has a history that dates back thousands of years, with evidence of human activity on the island dating back to the 10th millennium BC. The island has been influenced by various civilizations, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. This rich history is reflected in the diverse cultural heritage of Cyprus, making it an intriguing destination for families interested in exploring ancient sites and museums.
Birthplace of Aphrodite
According to Greek mythology, Cyprus is considered the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Legend has it that she was born from the sea foam near the rock of Petra tou Romiou, which is a popular tourist attraction that was on our list of places to visit.
Last Divided Capital in the World
Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, is the last divided capital in the world. The city has been divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974, with the northern part of the city being controlled by Turkey and the southern part by the Republic of Cyprus. The division is marked by a United Nations buffer zone, and a visit to Nicosia allows travelers to witness this unique geopolitical situation.
Copper Production in Ancient Times
The name Cyprus is linked to copper. In ancient times, the island was a significant producer of copper, and its name is derived from the Greek word “kypros,” meaning copper. The historical importance of Cyprus in the copper trade dates back to the Bronze Age, and archaeological sites on the island reveal evidence of early metallurgical activities.
Unique Language Situation
Cyprus is the only country in the European Union with a de facto official language that is not an official language of the EU. While Greek is the official language of the Republic of Cyprus, the northern part of the island, controlled by Turkey, uses Turkish as the official language.
Astronomical Observatories
The Troodos Mountains in Cyprus are home to several astronomical observatories due to the island’s clear skies and low light pollution. The Troodos Observatory and the Cyprus Astronomy Organization contribute to international efforts in astronomy and space research.
