There was travel post about Jordan that I had originally wrote, but had forgot to publish. I figured that before I post it, I’d share seven random facts about Jordan.
Bethany Beyond the Jordan
Bethany Beyond the Jordan is believed to be the site where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. This biblical site, also known as Al-Maghtas, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While it has historical and religious significance, it is not as widely recognized as some other religious sites in the region. From our visit, we learned the actual baptismal site is no longer on the River Jordan. Over the last two thousand years, the river moved further west.
Little Petra (Siq al-Barid)
Often overshadowed by its more famous counterpart, Little Petra is another archaeological site in Jordan. It features similar rock-cut architecture and is sometimes referred to as the “Back Door” of Petra. The name was probably created by a New Mexican archeologist. The site is less crowded and provides a more intimate experience for visitors interested in ancient Nabataean history.
Sand Boarding in the Desert
Jordan is known for its vast desert landscapes, and one quirky activity you can enjoy there is sand boarding. Forget snow-covered mountains, unless you read about Wadi Rum in the next entry, but you can strap on a board and glide down the sand dunes.
Floating in the Dead Sea
Jordan is home to the Dead Sea, one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. The high salt concentration allows people to effortlessly float on the surface. It’s practically impossible to sink and you’ll bob up and down like a cork.
The Sound of Music
There’s a town in Jordan called Um Qais, which is often associated with the biblical Gadarenes. While its historical significance is fascinating, it’s the town’s connection to the musical “The Sound of Music” that adds a humorous twist. Some locals claim that Um Qais is where Maria and the von Trapp family settled after fleeing Austria!
Pepper’s Type of Beauty Pageant
While camel racing is a well-known tradition in the Middle East, Jordan takes it a step further with camel beauty pageants. These competitions judge camels based on criteria not likely found in New Mexico, beauty, posture, and overall appearance.
Aqaba’s Underwater Post Office
The coastal city of Aqaba, Jordan has a unique attraction, an underwater post office. Snorkelers and divers can mail waterproof postcards from about 5 meters below the surface. It’s not only a quirky experience but also an amusing way to send postcards to friends and family, complete with underwater postmarks.
Soon I will post the last musings about our trip spring break trip to Jordan.
