Surprisingly Not the King of Beers in Qatar
World Cup Day 3 provided surprises, like Saudi Arabia beating Argentina 2 – 1. This winning result subsequently gave the entire country of Saudi Arabia a day off from work. There were no game tickets in our possession this day, just time to watch the games on t.v. while enjoying a nice cold beer.
The topic of beer is funny. Literally two days before the opening match between Qatar and Ecuador, Qatar changed course and prohibited the sale of alcoholic beer. Budweiser comically posted on some social media, “Well, this is awkward.”
About Face
Unexpectedly after many confirmations from the Qatari government prior to the tournament, Budweiser sales were scratched from inside stadiums. Fan zones, far from stadiums, replaced game sites as the place to enjoy the King of Beers. Inside stadiums, Budweiser still offered Bud Zero, their alcohol-free alternative. I found it to be a mix between bread liquid and apple juice.
In the end, fan zones, high-end restaurants, and my house would be the only place to enjoy the King of Beers. One can imagine how nonplussed (pulled this from a recent episode of the Simpsons) Budweiser was about this. They decided all that extra beer not being sold would be donated to the World Cup winning team.
Prohibition of alcohol can’t entirely be that bad right? My next game is the USA vs. England and the English are notorious for getting hammered and belligerent at games.
